Introduction - UD Dry Toilet Project

Message from Leader

CEO

I express my deepest condolences to the persons and their families who were involved in the earthquake and disaster in Eastern Japan.I strongly hope their quick recovery from this situation.

Responding to the disaster in the Eastern Japan, we considered that our past research achievements may contribute to their restoration and the revival after the great earthquake. In consequence, on the sewage treatment, especially on the night-soil treatment, we decided to make the toilet which is easily to be set up, and is possible to use without any water or energy. Furthermore, we would like to design an innovative sewage treatment system applicable to the disaster in the future.

Yoshihisa Shimizu

Our concept and Goals

The most important task of night-soil treatment is to contain and to sanitize feces. If the night-soil treatment does not work, untreated feces may cause waterborne disease, especially in the situation where there are no toilet or sanitation available.

We consider that, for night-soil treatment in the affected area, it is necessary to contain and sanitize feces without using water by the Urine Diversion Dry Toilet. Thus, one of our goals of this project is to distribute toilet of low cost, easily installed and with comfortability, to the affected area as quickly as possible.

We, at present, put the emphasis onto the area affected by Great East Japan Earthquake.

Cooperating with local citizen, governments and authorities concerned, we have the objectives of this project as follows:

(1) To design, make, improve, and distribute our toilet seat unit, that make existing toilet to UD Dry-toilet.
(2) To design, make, and improve for portable temporary housing the UD Dry Toilet.
(3) To design a new night soil treatment system with concept of urine diversion toilet, which is usable in both peacetime and disaster.
(4) To construct an innovative night soil treatment system and drainage system plan for the future.

etc.

This project is adopted and supported by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) Basic Research Programs (Research Institute Science and Technology for Society) “Implementation-support program for the Great East Japan Earthquake”, (12 May, 2011).
